Taiwan Machinery Manufacturing Corporation (TMMC) was founded in 1919 (Taisho year 8) during the Japanese Colonial Period and dissolved on March 1st, 1992. During the 83 years stretching through Japanese rule and Taiwan Restoration, TMMC went through numerous stages, including Japanese operation, World War II, being taken over by the nationalist government, confrontation across the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan’s economic take-off. During these stages TMMC was split and merged several times, it produced thousands of different products. Many major events of the era have left deep imprints on TMMC. While TMMC was still operating, it once developed into Taiwan’s largest heavy machinery manufacturer, but as private enterprises joined in the competition, TMMC failed to transform, ended its rich and colorful life after completing the privatization of its last machinery factory on November 19th, 1991.

TMMC began carrying out liquidation operations after privatization. Before liquidation were kept by China Steel Machinery Corporation, archives most were preserved in the category of the department and responsibility, but the archives were not cataloged. Among public enterprises that were privatized, TMMC was not listed as a target of investigation by the National Archives Administration (NAA) because TMMC was privatized before the Archives Act took effect.

The predecessor of TMMC was the main manufacturer of sugar industry machinery during the Japanese Colonial Period; after the war the company operated in coordination with government policies, including the “Ten Major Construction Projects” in the 60s and “overall operation objectives of cooperation between the national defense industry and state-owned enterprises,” such archives stand witness to the development of Taiwan’s national defense industry and state-owned enterprises and possess historical and information value. Therefore, after asking scholars and experts to conduct a field investigation, we listed all TMMC archives for transfer and completed transfer operations on September 20th, 2006.

TMMC archives that were transferred to the NAA include organizational restructuring, board of directors meeting minutes, financial management, and ship and steel management archives dated between 1945 and 2002, total length of archives was measured at 320 meters.
